Which time slot will you join for?! Come prepared for culture, science, technology and ocean adventure!

You MUST complete the Mālama Loko Ea Foundation health form and waiver in order to participate in the morning or afternoon sessions at Loko Ea in-person.

Morning Session: 8:30 am -12:00 pm: Explorations of Wai and Kai at Loko Ea

For the morning session, we will lead hui participants in an exploration of wai, kai, and the biodiversity that results from the meeting of these two waters. The day will begin with an intro at Loko Ea, which will lead into a mapping session about the sources of water and the biodiversity in the pond. We will implement kilo/data collection surveys, an underwater drone, and remote sensing field kits. At around 10:45am, the group will come together and share about what they did and any mana'o or takeaways. From there, we will all move into a restoration activity and finish at around 12pm.

Afternoon Session: 1:00-3:30 pm: Mapping Mo'olelo at Loko Ea

For this session, we will explore history and changes at Loko Ea through an interactive tour that incorporates the moʻolelo of people who have worked and lived on this ʻāina. Participants will view and listen to moʻolelo of community members in an interactive story map, bringing life to Loko Eaʻs past. Participants will then be able to practice the process of recording moʻolelo by conducting short interviews with Loko Ea staff members, which will be added to the existing story map. We will end this session with mālama ʻāina to contribute to the ongoing moʻolelo of Loko Eaʻs restoration.

In terms of what to bring for the Loko Ea sessions, here is a list of items we generally recommend:

Water bottle
Clothes you donʻt mind getting wet/dirty
Mask or face-covering (required)
Sun protection
Hat
Tabis/reef walkers
Change of clothes
Towel
Snack/lunch

Both of these sessions will start and finish at the entrance to Mālama Loko Ea Foundation, with parking in the dirt lot or across Kamehameha Hwy on the makai side. Carpool if safe and possible.

Sunset Session: 4:30-7:00 pm: Kilo and Navigation at Chun's Reef Beach Park and Kahōkūwelowelo.

4:30 pm - 5:15 pm Beach Kilo at Chunʻs Reef Beach Park (45 min)

5:30 pm - Sunset Site Visit and Storytelling at Kahōkūwelowelo

6:30 pm - 7:00 pm - Skygazing

We ask participants to park on the mauka side of Kamehameha Hwy and meet across the street at Chun's Reef Beach Park. BE CAREFUL CROSSING THE ROAD! Please bring closed toe shoes for the site visit at Kahōkūwelowelo as well as sun protection, water, and a flashlight (phone flashlights should work fine, too).

After the visit to Chunʻs we will drive our cars through the gate on Ashley Road up to Kahōkūwelowelo. Hōkūle'a Captain, Kamaki Worthington, will lead us on a site tour and tell us about the history of the area. We will then continue with kilo and skygazing.

Be sure to complete the appropriate waiver and form for participating in this afternoon/evening event with I Nui Ke Aho.
